Niger Reportedly Seizes 70 Kg of Gold Bound for the UAE, Reviving Scrutiny of the Sahel Gold Trade

By: GOLD MINERS CLUB DATE: 13-10-2026

Customs officers in Niger have intercepted more than 70 kilograms of gold bound for the United Arab Emirates, according to a report published on 30 September 2026 by The Lence. The report describes the bars as being on their way to the UAE and calls the case part of a pattern documented for years. thelence

The report does not say where the gold was stopped, how it was concealed, who was carrying it or whether anyone has been charged. Nigerien authorities have not been quoted, and I found no matching official statement or coverage elsewhere.

A familiar route

The UAE has long been the main destination for gold smuggled out of Africa. The Lence cites a 2024 SWISSAID report finding that most artisanal gold passing through Niger and Benin ended up in the UAE, and that in 2022 the UAE imported roughly 405 tonnes more African gold than the continent officially exported. That figure is consistent with SWISSAID’s findings as reported elsewhere: in 2022, an estimated 66.5% (405 tonnes) of the gold the UAE imported from Africa had been smuggled out of African countries. The same reporting says this smuggled gold is mostly from artisanal and small-scale mining. Niger customs seize more than 70 kilograms of gold headed for UAE | The Lence +2

The 2024 Addis Ababa case

The report also recalls the biggest earlier case involving Niger. In 2024, about 1,400 kg of gold from Niger, headed for Dubai without official documents, was seized at Addis Ababa airport, with a value above 60 billion CFA francs. Other outlets give a slightly higher weight: Mondafrique reports 1,578 kg seized in early January 2024. Afterwards, authorities replaced 82 customs, police, forestry and gendarmerie agents posted at Niamey’s Diori Hamani airport. The gap between official and real exports

The Lence says Niger officially exported 235 kg of gold in 2022 while the UAE imported about €457 million worth. The first figure matches other reporting: Niger officially exported 235 kg in 2022, worth under 10 million euros, per the EITI. The €457 million figure may be misdated. A fact-check cites Transparency International Niger as saying the UAE imported 11.8 tonnes of gold worth €457 million from Niger, against a declared national production of 235.6 kg in 2019. Either way, the gap points to large unrecorded flows. mondafriquetogocheck

Why it matters

Analysts say much of this gold comes from informal mining and is refined abroad, where its origin is lost. The Lence says gold from conflict zones and smuggling routes is melted down in Dubai refineries and re-enters the market with clean paperwork, and that UAE rules exempt gold in hand luggage from declaration. A single 70 kg seizure is small against the estimated volumes. The report itself calls it only a fraction of what leaves each week, though it offers no data for that claim.

Points to verify

  • The Lence says President Tiani froze all mining licenses after the 2024 seizure. The only other item I found that mentions this claim, a fact-check, discusses it as a caption attached to a misleading viral video. Confirm it before repeating it.
  • Date, airport or border post, and route of the 70 kg seizure.
  • Whether Niger’s customs directorate or Ministry of Mines has issued a statement.
