Why Gold and Silver Fell During the Binance Hack and AI Bubble Scare

Safe-haven metals broke the usual rules at the end of October 2026

A record crypto theft and a tech selloff driven by AI spending fears hit markets in the same week. Textbook logic says gold and silver should have rallied. They fell instead.

What happened

The Binance breach. Binance said a security incident affected about $6.3 billion in client assets, with roughly $3 billion frozen on-chain, making it the largest crypto hack on record. Circle said it froze more than $800 million in USDC tied to the incident, and Tether’s CEO said more than $1.5 billion of its stablecoin was frozen. Binance later said its first theory of a compromised laptop was incomplete because investigators found additional points of breach. The exchange has pledged to cover losses from its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU). $6.3 billion Binance hack is largest crypto theft on record +3

The AI bubble scare. October ended with investors taking a harder look at the cost of the AI boom. Technology led a broad decline after disappointing reactions to Amazon and Intel earnings reinforced worries about spending, profitability and cash flow. The Nasdaq was down 3.4% and the S&P 500 down 2.2% during Friday’s session. investingliveCoinDesk

What it did to precious metals

The moves were large and went the wrong way for anyone expecting a flight to safety:

  • Gold: Spot gold dropped 3.44% to $3,881.68 an ounce, its lowest level since October 2025. That leaves gold about 30% below its January record of $5,595. invezzinvezz
  • Silver: Silver fell 5.8% to $49.33, breaking below $50 for the first time in 11 months. It is down more than 50% since topping $100 in February. invezzCoinDesk
  • Platinum: Platinum was down 3.5% at $1,441. fxstreet
  • The month: By October 30, gold was down about 6.3% from the September 30 close and silver had lost 18.6%. goldsilver

Why safe havens failed

Several forces overlapped. The causal story below is my interpretation of the reporting, not something any one source states.

1. Interest rates mattered more than fear. Gold has fallen on expectations of higher interest rates for longer and weaker demand in Asia. Fed speakers kept rate hikes in play. Gold pays no yield, so a hawkish Fed makes it less attractive, whatever else is happening. invezzinvestinglive

2. Forced selling and thin liquidity. When equities and crypto drop together, investors with leveraged losses often sell whatever they can sell. Gold and silver are liquid and were still holding gains, which makes them natural sources of cash. One analyst argued that tighter liquidity explained why gold fell even during a crisis. fxstreet

3. The AI bubble hits metals through two channels. First, a tech correction tightens financial conditions. Second, much of the AI buildout depends on copper, silver and other industrial metals. Doubts about AI spending feed into industrial demand expectations, which weighs more heavily on silver than on gold. That is one reason silver fell nearly three times as much as gold in October.

4. A stagflation signal. Crude oil rose to about $104 while metals fell, which one analyst called a classic stagflation signal. Oil was rising on escalating Middle East tensions. Rising energy costs push inflation up and give the Fed less room to cut rates, which hurts gold in the short run. fxstreetinvezz

Is the safe-haven case broken?

Not necessarily, but the last 24 hours showed its limits.

  • Gold still has structural support. Central bank buying, geopolitical risk and concern about digital-asset custody remain real arguments for holding it.
  • The Binance hack reinforces the physical-asset case. Binance’s loss is covered only because the exchange’s balance sheet can absorb it. Some commentators argue this is exactly why owning metal outright is safer than holding a claim on an exchange. That is a bullish argument, not a settled fact. CNBC
  • Fear is not enough. Gold tends to rise on fear only when real yields are stable or falling. When rate expectations rise, fear trades can be overwhelmed.

What to watch next

  • Technical support. One analyst flags $3,600–$3,400 as the next logical support zone for gold. fxstreet
  • Fed communication. Any shift away from hike talk would take pressure off gold.
  • Binance’s recovery. Binance has said it is targeting a withdrawal restart on Sunday. An orderly restart would ease crypto stress and forced-selling pressure. Further breaches would do the opposite. CoinDesk
  • AI earnings and capex guidance. A deeper tech rout could keep liquidity tight in the short term. A prolonged drawdown could eventually revive safe-haven demand, particularly if rates come down.
  • Oil and Middle East developments. Higher energy prices complicate the inflation picture and the Fed’s options.

Bottom line

The Binance breach and the AI spending scare hit precious metals through rate expectations, liquidity and industrial-demand worries, not through the flight-to-safety channel. Silver, with its mix of industrial and monetary demand, took the heavier damage. Whether this is a pause in a longer bull market or the start of a deeper correction depends on the Fed, the tech sector and the Middle East.
